The old saying “don’t judge a book by it’s cover” was so true when it came to Bearns’ book. While the cover was boring ole black with white writing the content that unfolded on the pages certainly wasn’t boring. Far from it! (Ok so I know the cover of a book isn’t that big of a deal. But for me there’s just something about a book with a ‘pretty’ cover).

Product Description:

Do It or Age Quickly 60-second practices to live better, stronger and longer by by JB Berns is 214 pages (including the index) full of 21 interesting anti-aging techniques as well as stress and fear-reducing methods, herbal tea that energizes and bolsters your immune system and more.

Buyer Description:

This book is definitely not for everyone. If you’re a Christian you will find yourself biting your tongue, shaking your head and skipping over some of the practices that Bearns shares. If you’re not willing to take the time to put into the exercises/practices that he mentions in the book it isn’t for you.

So who is the book for?

Anyone that doesn’t get offended by reading something that was created from many different influences (philosophies, etc) especially Taoism and they are looking for anti-aging techniques that are simple and quick and you have a little time to set aside each day to implement what is being taught.

The Negatives:

Chapter 13 found on page 119 talks about three animal exercises that in the Taoist tradition are called the Crane, Turtle and Deer exercises. The deer exercises are a little ‘descriptive’ and require a lot of touching your body in intimate places (for both the male and female).

While I didn’t like the whole premise of what chapter 13 (and 14 too) was based on (Taoism) and what the deer exercises ask you to do I was intrigued when I came across this (found on page 130)

“In the Taoist tradition, uterine blood is meant specifically to nourish a developing fetus in the womb and afterward to support breastfeeding. If a woman is not pregnant or breastfeeding, menstrual blood represents a depletion of energy and vitality.”

I totally agree that it’s a depletion of energy but I do not agree one bit with the whole Taoism way of thinking. If there wasn’t a reason behind woman having menstrual periods then God would have not created our bodies to have them on a regular basis!

The other thing I found interesting in this section was that doing these deer exercises on a daily routine is supposed to eventually stop teh menstrual flow. Not too sure I agree with that or not but I’m certainly not about to give these deer exercises a try to find out either. (I’d really love to find someone who has purchased this book and tried these deer excises to find out what their results were).

The Positives:

There were several other sections of the book that I chose to ignore and skip over but there were also several areas I found to be useful with practices that I can put into action and have started implementing. For example chapter 15 (page 147) is all about stretching. I’ve suffered from back problems since I was in a car accident several years ago. I just started the stretching practices taught and I was surprised to notice that after just one morning my back felt a lot looser. I seem to have a wider range of movement with less pain today also.

Chapter 16 is all about rebounding which is right up my alley at this moment in time as I recently purchased a TKO 38-Inch Mini Trampoline from an Estate sale this past summer but have been a bit bored with it because I wasn’t entirely sure how to exercise with it other than get on and jump. Bearns described the benefits of rebounding and went over the basic stance and basic bounce. I had no clue there was an ‘art’ to rebounding but I’m looking forward to doing it more frequently now that Bearns broke it down and explained it in Do It Or Age Quickly.

Closing Thoughts:

As I already mentioned there were several areas of the book I found useful with things I can do and have started implementing but there were more areas of this book I skipped over and wasn’t interested in. It’s not a book I would have picked up on my own. I honestly can’t give a thumbs up or thumbs down because there were things I liked and things I didn’t.

If you are interested then please do pick up your copy of Do It or Age Quickly by JB Berns. I’d love to hear your thoughts if you purchase it!

(Note: I was given a copy of this book to review for free. I was not paid to provide this review)

When I received the book I had a really hard time getting into it. It was one of those books that started off a bit slow for me. In fact, I actually put the book down three times not sure whether I was even going to be able to finish it.

Finally towards the middle of the book – chapter 14 or so – Penguin Luck
grabbed my attention and I found myself intrigued and wondering what was going to happen next!

What is Penguin Luck about?

It’s about a young woman – Doreen Lowe – who’s a junior associate in a small Manhattan law firm and has a burdensome family history, which includes a trio of ghosts that plead with her to carry on for them (after the Holocaust) to face.

While engaged to one man – a man that fulfills her family’s wishes – Doreen falls in love with another and they hastily marry which sends her ‘family’ into an uproar.

Now that she feels the ‘freedom’ of making her own decisions (the hasty marriage to someone her family doesn’t approve of) she’s now faced with both external and internal pressures. Her three ghosts from her family’s past are constantly urging her to carry on their lineage by pursuing the life they imagined for her including the marriage to her ex-fiance and a brood of children, which she can’t provide for them. Penguin Luck is all about Doreen coming to terms with the choices she’s made and having to deal with the ghosts from her family’s past.

Would I Recommend the Book?

While I didn’t enjoy the first portion of the book I would recommend it because the middle to end of the book was great! The beginning was all about filling in the details that needed to be in place to transition into the rest of the book. I just didn’t care for the beginning.

Here we are full swing into 2010! It’s that time of year when everyone is starting New Year’s Resolutions. As I mentioned in My Commitment To Me For 2010 I didn’t make resolutions because I don’t ever stick to them. So instead I set goals for myself and yes once again losing weight, exercising and food lifestyle changes are at the top of my goals list!

I am starting back on the Fat Loss Quickie Program that I joined a couple months ago. The exercises are geared towards those of us that work from home and as in my case suffer from computer butt! I’ve always struggled with my weight and I’m Queen of yo-yo dieting (NOT a good thing!) but since I started working from home four years (this month) ago I’ve struggled even more with it! Scott’s FLQ program makes exercising quick and easy. But the one thing I really like about the program is that Scott is always interacting with you – on his forum, on his blog, on Twitter, on Facebook, etc. He makes himself available and that makes the program well worth the $20!

If you struggle with staying motivated, like I do, once you start a new exercise/weight loss routine check out this free motivation report by Scott! Make no mistake, Scott doesn’t let you off easy with this one. If you want something bad enough, you’ve got to DO what you need to do to get there and Scott pulls no punches with this jam packed motivational report.

Mondays are going to be my motivation for the week. I will be doing my weigh in’s on Monday (guess that might not always be a motivation when the numbers aren’t going down it can be hard to remain motivated) and posting the results here. Of course today’s weigh in I’m not posting here because I don’t care to share with the blogosphere what I weigh lol

So how about you – are you eating healthier or starting an exercise program?

A couple weeks ago I posted this Wordless Wednesday photo and I totally forgot to come back and do a Tell Me Thursday post about it. I forgot all about it until one of my readers commented that she wanted to know the story behind the picture (thanks for the ‘reminder’ Jen!).

Here’s the Photo Again (The Tree That Grew Shoes):

The Story:

The tree has always put a smile on my face every time I pass it. This tree is located on a main road between Mancelona, Michigan and Kalkaska, Michigan. For as long as I can remember the ‘Shoe Tree’ has been around. At one point in time the county or someone came along and took all the shoes down to no avail. It wasn’t long after the shoes were taken down that they started appearing again!

Not much of a story behind the picture but I find it cute and just wanted to share.

I was recently contacted in regards to reviewing a music CD -- Jonny Diaz -- (Christian music which I love) and it came at a time that I had just been searching iTunes for some new music. I’m happy to say that I get to giveaway five (5) CD’s as well!

Review: Jonny Diaz’s newest CD More Beautiful You

The first word that popped into my mind as I was listening was wow. Not only was his voice amazing but the lyrics to the songs touched my heart in ways I can’t even express. Especially the song More Beautiful You.

I usually have a hard time getting into new music -- I like listening to things that I am familiar with and at least know a few words to the songs. But there was something about this CD that drew me in. There isn’t one song on the CD that I don’t like!

There’s just something about the soothing, upbeat, soft way of Jonny Diaz’s voice and the encouraging words he sings that kept (and still keeps) me engrossed. I found myself with goosebumps and tears during a few of the songs and even found myself sighing when the CD ended. The first day alone I listened to the CD 3 times and every day since I’ve listened to it at least once if not more.

Here’s his video to More Beautiful You and the lyrics are posted below the video if you wold like to read them.

More Beautiful You Lyrics

Little girl fourteen flipping through a magazine
Says she wants to look that way
But her hair isn’t straight her body isn’t fake
And she’s always felt overweight

Well little girl fourteen I wish that you could see
That beauty is within your heart
And you were made with such care your skin your body and your hair
Are perfect just the way they are

There could never be a more beautiful you
Don’t buy the lies disguises and hoops they make you jump through
You were made to fill a purpose that only you could do
So there could never be a more beautiful you

Little girl twenty-one the things that you’ve already doneLITTLE GIRL Anything to get ahead
And you say you’ve got a man be he’s got another plan
Only wants what you will do instead

Well little girl twenty-one you never thought that this would come
You starve yourself to play the part
But I can promise you there’s a man whose love is true
And he’ll treat you like the jewel you are

So turn around you’re not too far
To back away be who you are
To change your path go another way
It’s not too late you can be saved
If you feel depressed with past regrets
The shameful nights hope to forgets
Can disappear they can all be washed away
By the one who’s strong can right your wrongs
Can rid your fears dry all your tears
And change the way you look at this big world
He will take your dark distorted view
And with his light he will show you truth
And again you’ll see through the eyes of a little girl
