Mom Why Does It Hurt When You Care About Someone?
I had to drop everything and come write a quick post. My son amazes me with the things that come out of his mouth. Tonight was no different.
Caleb: Mom
Me: What honey?
Caleb: Is it ok if I’m friends with DaniLynn?
Me: Well why wouldn’t it be ok Caleb?
Caleb: Because we aren’t boyfriend and girlfriend anymore
Me: (as I’m thinking in my head when did they become ‘boyfriend’ and ‘girlfriend’) Well that’s ok Caleb you are too young for a girlfriend anyways.
Caleb: Mom I really cared about her. Mom why does it hurt your heart so bad when you care about someone?
Me: (As I swallow hard to get rid of the lump forming in my throat) Well Caleb that’s what happens sometimes. Sometimes two people just need to take a break from one another.
Caleb: Like how you and well you know (he thinks he can’t say his name anymore) who had to take a break and you cried for days?
Me: (as I’m thinking poor kid he really did notice I cried for days on end) Yes Caleb just like Seth and I.
Caleb: Well I’ve decided that I’m never having a girlfriend again at least until I’m 18.
Me: (as I’m grinning from ear to ear at that one!) Well that sounds like a very wise decision honey.
Caleb: Mom I still like her and I just want her next boyfriend to respect her, be nice to her and care about her as much as I did. (That was so sweet!!!!)
Oh my goodness…where did all that come from? He’s only 9…I’m so not ready for him having a broken heart especially while mommy is healing from one too.

Sounds like Matthew… and he’s 11… i think it’s something with boys who have single moms… hugs to both of you
