I’ve Invaded Its Territory

Ok I don’t know what the heck this ‘it’ is but it scared the crap out of me just a few minutes ago. My backyard looks like an overgrown jungle it needs to be mowed so bad. I attempted to start the lawn mower last week…ok don’t laugh at me but I couldn’t start it! I primed it like it said, I had the handle thingy pulled up like I was supposed to so it should have been as easy as pulling the cord for it to start. Wrong. I pulled that cord like a mad woman and no matter how fast I pulled the darn mower wouldn’t start. It sounded like it wanted to but it just wouldn’t.

That brings me to today. For whatever reason I got the brilliant idea that I suddenly became stronger over the course of about four maybe five days. LOL So I opened the shed when all of a sudden I heard some rustling noises off to the side.

Let me just say that I have an over active imagination a brilliant mind and the first thoughts that popped into my head (regardless of the fact I was just outside the shed and saw there wasn’t anything/anyone there) were oh no who’s there, what do they want, what do I do?

I tip toe my way to the doors of the shed, peek my head around to the left side….nothing. Whew good. My heart starts to slow back down to normal rhythms. I walk to the other side peek my head out there and to my horror I see something staring me down. Or maybe the proper phrase would be staring me up seems how I towered over this thing. I run to my house. Of course it wasn’t a quiet run. I got a few screams out. Probably more screams than need be but whatever. And I lean against the door (because this big ole critter is gonna come bang my door down ya know!) and wait. And wait. I have to get back out there to lock the shed back up (because at this point in time mowing the jungle is the last thing on my mind and besides if I wasn’t strong enough to start it last week I’m sure I didn’t grow super muscles to be able to start it today!).

Finally it looks safe. Whatever the heck that beady eyed critter was wasn’t around so I ventured back to the shed, locked it up and started walking back to the house only to hear the rustling noise again. I turn and see this dumb creature staring me down again!

It made me feel like I was invading its territory! And whatever this thing is it isn’t afraid to take control of my back yard. I’m sitting in the office looking out the window watching this thing dine on the grass, roam through the yard and bask in the sun. Hey maybe I won’t have to mow if it keeps munching on the grass!

It even let me walk to the sliding glass door in the kitchen and snap a picture of it! Oh and did I mention how it is terrorizing my kitten by running through the yard? Oiy Yo!

Here’s a picture of my backyard friend:

Anyone know what the heck this thing is?????

How much wood would a woodchuck chuck? LOL!

PS – did you make sure to start the mower on your driveway? If the lawn is deep, it prob can’t spin fast enough to start.

First thought was a gopher or beaver. Cute lil thing! LOL

As for the lawnmower, does it have gas and oil in it? I know, silly question but ….

Whoa, that thing is huge! All we ever get around here are ground squirrels (chipmunks) and once in a blue moon I’ll see a raccoon or opossum.

So does the kitten sit in the window and watch it? Mine has been driving me crazy trying to catch the ladybugs that invade our house when the weather cools down.

I googled it. It’s a woodchuck (aka groundhog). Here’s the link to some info about it. http://www.pestproducts.com/woodchucks.htm

    Love you!!!

HA HA….it’s hysterical to me that you have a ground hog in your yard! They were my favorite animals to see at the zoo when I was little. I would have died to have one in my yard!

Yep, it’s a groundhog. We have one that lives in our yard and we’ve seen him every year for a couple years now. He has a path from the shed to the big ditch at the edge of our property. :)

It is a groundhog, my parents had a family of them in the garden when I was growing up.

Make sure you prime the lawn mower enough, but not too much and pull start it on the driveway.
