Breastfeeding Mom & I Argue in Store!
Alright I think I need to get off this little power trip I’m on because now my mouth is just getting me into trouble. But hey I’m liking the fact that I’m not a doormat for people to wipe their feet on anymore and that I do have ‘balls’ to speak up & put my foot down about issues.
So anyways – I pick Caleb up from school we head to the Dr’s office, get his prescription & off to the joyful world of Christmas shopping crazy people packed aisles of the local store.
I didn’t go in there with the intention of talking to anyone except the pharmacy technician. Instead my son and I are sitting on the bench waiting for his prescription when to the left of us this woman sits on the bench pulls her t-shirt up, pulls her boob out & sticks it in the babies mouth.
Now before anyone thinks I’m ANTI breastfeeding or something like that let me make it VERY clear that I’m not and I think breastfeeding is a wonderful thing for not only baby but mother too. My beef with this lady is the fact that she had no coat, no blanket, no nothing to cover herself with & my son got an eyeful that was not appropriate for him to get.
I politely offered up my coat & when she refused I said I have a 9 year old boy sitting here that does not need to see your breast. She proceeded to tell me that I’m just another one of those stuck up bit**es that is against natural parenting and breastfeeding.
Whoa stop yourself right there lady. First of all you don’t know a damn thing about me, second of all you need to get off your high horse & realize that it’s inappropriate to whip your breast out in public & not cover up. I’m not talking she showed just a little skin, you saw everything and my son was just a staring.
Ok so drama over right? Wrong! Up comes a man & a woman (young couple) and he gets ticked & vents off some nasty words about the pharmacy being slow to fill prescriptions. Then he sees the breastfeeding woman & wants to know if she’ll share. Then he sits in this chair by the pharmacy that is a massager and proceeds to tell his girlfriend or wife of whatever she is that he’s getting …. parts of his body massaged and they’ll need some relief.
OH MY GOD!
So do you think I kept my mouth shut about that? NOPE! I had a few words with him about the fact that my 9 year old son was sitting there & didn’t need to hear him talking of his bodily parts the way he was.
Needless to say I grabbed Caleb and out the door we went – no prescription! I’ll go back when he’s in school.
All I can say is what the heck?????

OMG!! Good for you for sticking up for your son! I swear, people are just plain stupid sometimes.

Um. Yeah. What Christina said! Some breastfeeding moms aren’t very modest. I might have been slightly irked as well because I breastfed all my children but I did it in a way that no one got a free peep and many never realized what I was doing. So I know it’s possible to do it without being offensive!
As for the man… geez! Hopefully he’s sterile and won’t produce more idiots. Good for you, Tishia!

Good for you Tishia. I’m breastfeeding Amy right now and the only place I just whip it out is at home, and even then I use a blanket sometimes. I even find that she eats better when she’s covered; she’s not distracted as easily. As for that guy’s comments – how disgusting! I would have said something to the management, too. It’s a pharmacy for crying out loud, not an adult entertainment store.

The breastfeeding thing can be a toughy. I know it’s natural and you’re only feeding your baby, but the fact of the matter is is that our country see breasts as sexual…you can’t deny that. So even though the Mom is just feeding the baby, most everyone looks at the exposed breast as sexual and not as feeding the baby.
I’m like everyone else…it’s natural, it’s healthy, and it’s great…but be a bit more descrete. And for heavens sake…that woman had no right to call you a bitch. You had a valid concern. 9 year old boys don’t need to see a breast exposed.
As for the man…ugh, I would have gone off on him for sure. Perverted ahole if you ask me. Good for you, Tishia. We may not always get the results we hope, when speaking out minds, but at least we know we let our opinion be known.
Gosh in one day caleb is exposed to cursing, perverted talk, and a boob. lol
