Kids and Extra Curricular Activities

My son, Caleb, will be 8 on Friday – wow how time flows!  He has been asking for a few years to join soccer, karate, a bowling league and to take guitar lessons.  I believe that all kids should be involved in some sort of “group” type function.  Not only is it good for them to be doing something other than watching TV or playing video games it will also help build their social skills.

I’ve been using the excuse that as a single mom I can’t afford for Caleb to do this or do that and then it dawned on me – how selfish is that?  If I need make up or my hair cut or something “non essential” for the most part I find a way to get it.  I decided that this year no matter what I was going to let Caleb pick one thing and sign him up for it.  He chose a bowling league.

Now my question/concern is how long the bowling season goes for.  I’ve been on a bowling league before & the season tends to be pretty long.  As adults we probably don’t mind because we enjoy doing it.  I am just a bit concerned with the length of the season for an 8 year old.  The season goes from September to May!  That’s a lot of money to invest if Caleb decides he doesn’t like it.

So my question to you is if you sign your child up for something is it a rule that you make them finish the season/year out EVEN if they find they don’t like it?  Or do you let them quit?
